Now, the <a href=\"http:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\">School of Languages, Cultures, and Race,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/wsu.edu\">WSU<\/a>, will have a presence in this association that has been active for nine years. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umce.cl\/index.php\/noticias-fac-historia\/item\/2489-congreso-humanidades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read more about what she did as a member of this international group.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doctoral Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/lucia-soriano\/\">Lucia Soriano<\/a>, Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/lisa-guerrero\/\">\u00a0Dr. Lisa Guerrero<\/a>, Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/ana-maria-rodriguez-vivaldi\/\">Dr. Ana Mar\u00eda Rodriguez-Vivaldi<\/a>, and Doctoral Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/nicholas-d-krebs\/\">Nicholas D. Krebs<\/a> became members of a National Endowment for the Humanities Next Generation Grant project called \u201cReinvisioning the 21st Century Land-Grant Ph.D.\u201d The project is about rethinking graduate education at land-grant institutions. Dr.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\/welcome\/deans-office\/college-leadership\/\">Todd Butler<\/a>, associate dean for CAS faculty affairs, is the principal investigator of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/lisa-guerrero\/\">Dr. Lisa Guerrero<\/a>, associate professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies, became a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.wsu.edu\/provosts-leadership-academy\/\">Provost&#8217;s Leadership Academy<\/a> this year. PLA recognizes outstanding faculty on their campus and provides the faculty with a training program to expand their confidence, leadership skills, and University network. During her tenure in PLA, Guerrero will lead the UCORE Diversity Committee, establishing mechanisms and processes to assess UCORE courses with Diversity designation and developing resources for instructors who currently teach, or plan to teach, UCORE Diversity courses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/carmen-r-lugo-lugo\/\">Dr. Carmen R. Lugo-Lugo<\/a>, director of <a href=\"http:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\">SLCR<\/a> and professor of comparative ethnic studies, was a keynote speaker at this year\u2019s University Convocation. In Beasley Coliseum, she told 2,800 students about her journey at the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upr.edu\/\"> University of Puerto Rico<\/a> and how it led her to achieve her master&#8217;s and doctoral degrees at WSU. Lugo-Lugo recalled struggling with decisions about her future after her undergraduate education. She told the new WSU students at Convocation that it\u2019s okay to not know what you want to do because it allows you to explore various options. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\/2018\/08\/06\/cas-professor-selected-to-speak-at-convocation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read more about her speech.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/david-leonard\/\">Dr. David Leonard<\/a>, CES and American studies professor at WSU, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gws.uic.edu\/people\/gws-faculty\/kishonna-gray\">Dr. Kishonna L. In his book, he describes how some democratic practice has connections to slavery, inequality, racism and war. The book details the system of democracy that seems to have condemned people to life in exploitation, poverty, and inequalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In November,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/vilma-navarro-daniels\/\">Dr. Vilma Navarro-Daniels<\/a>, associate professor of Spanish and American Studies, received the Marianna Merritt and Donald S. Matteson Distinguished Professorship in Foreign Languages and Cultures from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\/\">WSU College of Arts and Sciences<\/a>. This professorship will provide funds to further her teaching and research. She plans to use the funds to support her research and education projects with colleagues at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umce.cl\/\">Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educaci\u00f3n (UMCE)<\/a> in Santiago, Chile. She also plans to use the funds for her personal research in Spanish and Chilean film, literature, and popular culture products. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\/2018\/11\/15\/navarro%E2%80%91daniels-named-matteson-distinguished-professor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read more about her achievement.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 14, <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/kayo-niimi\/\">Kayo Niimi<\/a>, instructor of Japanese, received the United Greek Council&#8217;s Outstanding Faculty Member Award at the 2018 Arete Awards. The awards were presented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/gogreek.wsu.edu\/\">WSU Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentinvolvement.wsu.edu\/leadership\/lead-ceremony\/\">Leadership and Engagement Awards of Distinction (LEAD)<\/a> ceremony, four of our school\u2019s members received awards.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/ana-maria-rodriguez-vivaldi\/\">\u00a0Dr. Ana Mar\u00eda Rodr\u00edguez-Vivaldi<\/a>, associate professor of Spanish, American Studies, and Film Studies and associate dean of Student Affairs and Global Education, <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\">College of Arts and Sciences<\/a>, and three students received the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/studentinvolvement.wsu.edu\/leadership\/lead-ceremony\/presidents-awards\">President\u2019s Award for Leadership<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\">WSU\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\">College of Arts and Sciences<\/a>. Shanelle Briggs, class of 2018, majoring in Spanish and Basic Medical Sciences; Abu Kamara, class of 2018, majoring in Comparative Ethnic Studies and Political Science; and Omar Zaragoza, class of 2019, majoring in Comparative Ethnic Studies and Political Science were the student recipients of the award. In August 2018, the University began recognizing faculty at 5 years of service. When an employee reaches a milestone, they receive a letter of congratulations, a certificate of service, a lapel pin, and an award selected by the employee. This year the WSU President hosted the Fourteenth Annual Employee Recognition Reception to honor all employees who passed their milestone. While there, Davis presented \u201cProgramme de fran\u00e7ais interdisciplinaire \u00e0 Washington State University\u201d (Interdisciplinary Program in French at WSU) and \u201cL&#8217;Organisation\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Internationale de la Francophonie: origine, d\u00e9veloppement et perspectives\u201d (International Organization of Francophony: origin, development and perspectives). In October, she went to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to present at the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmmla.org\/\">Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association (RMMLA)<\/a> convention, where she presented in the Pedagogy session on her capstone course, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">French Culture Through Wine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/jose-francisco-arellano-serratos\/\">Dr. Jos\u00e9 Francisco Arrellano-Serratos,<\/a> instructor of Spanish and Latin American Literature, presented a paper at the XLII IILI conference in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, in July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/vilma-navarro-daniels\/\">Dr. Vilma Navarro-Daniels,<\/a> associate professor of Spanish, <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/maria-serenella-previto\/\">Maria Serenella Previto (Sere),<\/a> associate clinical professor, and <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/begona-de-quintana-lasa\/\">Bego\u00f1a De Quintana Lasa,<\/a> graduate student, presented at the annual international conference of the Association of Gender and Sexuality Studies, held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uic.edu\/\">University of Illinois at Chicago<\/a> in September. Navarro-Daniels presented \u201cAlejandro Moreno Jash\u00e9s\u2019s, The Fascist Lover: When Evil has a Female Voice.\u201d De Quintana Lasa presented \u201cQueer Gothic in Rosal\u00eda de Castro\u2019s, El Caballero de las Botas Azules.\u201d Previto presented \u201cVoice and Pact of Silence: An Approach to Cristina Fern\u00e1ndez Cubas\u2019s, Blood Sisters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Associate Professor<a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/john-streamas\/\">\u00a0Dr. John Streamas<\/a> presented his paper, \u201cThe Overselling of Higher Education to People of Color\u201d at the Race and Pedagogy conference, which was hosted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pugetsound.edu\/\">University of Puget Sound<\/a> in Seattle in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">German Instructor <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/karen-jennings\/\">Karen Jennings<\/a> attended the joint conference: \u201cWashington Association For Language Teaching&#8211;Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching\u201d (WAFLT-COFLT) in Portland, Oregon, in October. The theme was \u201cWhere Language Educators Meet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/vilma-navarro-daniels\/\">Dr. Vilma Navarro-Daniels,<\/a> associate professor of Spanish and American Studies, was invited by the Dean of the College of History, Geography, and Letters, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umce.cl\/\">Metropolitan University of Sciences of Education (UMCE)<\/a>, Santiago, Chile, to give the keynote address at the 21st International Congress in the Humanities in October. Her presentation was titled \u201cRace, Gender, and Memory in New Chilean Cinema.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umce.cl\/index.php\/noticias-fac-historia\/item\/2489-congreso-humanidades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read more about this conference. <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/faculty\/maria-lee-lopez\/\">Mar\u00eda Elena Lee-L\u00f3pez<\/a>, adjunct instructor of Spanish, participated in an electronic poster presentation, \u201cStudent-Made Common Craft Videos Improve Oral Proficiency,\u201d at the ACTFL conference in New Orleans in November. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doctoral Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/nicholas-d-krebs\/\">Nicholas D. Krebs<\/a> attended the annual meeting of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theasa.net\/\">American Studies Association (ASA)<\/a> in Atlanta, Georgia, in November. At the meeting, Nicholas participated in four panels. He was the interviewee for the Mock Job Interview at the \u201cFriday Breakfast Forum and Mock Job Interview\u201d panel. That panel illustrates a mock interview between faculty members who have served on search committees and an advanced graduate student who is navigating the job market. The panel may help people who are preparing for the job market or already in the job market. In \u201cNo Ban, No Paywall, Open Access For All: The Ethics of Open Access Publishing\u201d panel, he was a discussant who was sponsored by the Students\u2019 Committee. At this panel, he represented graduate student interests in open access publishing. In the next panel called \u201cAcademic Labor, Austerity, and Authoritarianism,\u201d he was a panelist representing the Students\u2019 Committee. This panel was co-sponsored by ASA Critical Ethnic Studies Committee and the ASA Marxism Caucus. He discussed the National Endowment of the Humanities Next Generation Grant, which he is a member of. Lastly, Krebs organized the panel \u201cGenerational Gifts: A Convivial Celebration of Mentoring, Scholarship, and the Future of American Studies.\u201d This event was sponsored by the ASA Committee on Gender and Sexuality Studies, the ASA Minority Scholars Committee, and the ASA Critical Ethnic Studies Committee. At the panel, people ate a vegan food from a brunch buffet while several awards were presented by the committees. In addition to this, there was a mentor and mentee meet and greet, to facilitate new networks of scholarly exchange and professional development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doctoral Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/veronica-sandoval\/\">Veronica Sandoval<\/a> was the keynote speaker for the annual Children of Aztlan Seeking Higher Education (CASHE) conference in November. The slogan for this year\u2019s \u201cUniting Communities: CASHE 2018\u201d conference was \u201cYou are the ripple that causes the movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doctoral Candidate and TA <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/casey-ratto\/\">Casey Ratto<\/a> was recently accepted to present at the 2019 National PCA\/ACA Conference in Washington, D.C. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doctoral Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/lucia-soriano\/\">Lucia Soriano<\/a>\u2019s \u201cNegotiating Popular Feminism in Freeform\u2019s The Bold Type\u201d paper was accepted to the March 2019 Society for Cinema and Media Studies conference. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Summer of 2019, Doctoral Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/lucia-soriano\/\">Lucia Soriano<\/a> and Doctoral Candidate<a href=\"https:\/\/slcr.wsu.edu\/graduate-students\/nicholas-d-krebs\/\"> Nicholas D. Her paper analyzes the representation of violations of human rights committed during Augusto Pinochet\u2019s dictatorship and the role of Catholic Church in the defense of the victims and their families symbolized in the person of Cardinal, Ra\u00fal Silva Henr\u00edquez. Niimi applied for the grant and has received three previous grants from JFLA: two for $1,000 and another for $700. The previous grants helped supply textbooks and other materials for her courses and funding for a community comedy performance by a world-renowned Rakugo artist. The new salary assistance grant will allow for a part-time teaching position of Japanese culture courses. It also will help foster new ways to expand students\u2019 knowledge of Japanese history, culture, and language.
