Scholarships

The School of Languages, Cultures, and Race offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for our students. Scholarships are awarded each spring for summer study abroad and the following school year, and are funded through the following endowments which are established by generous alumni, donors and friends of the school.

For support of the American Studies Program.

Comparative Ethnic Studies Scholarships

Community Engagement and Activism Scholarship

For full-time undergraduate students majoring or minoring in the field of Comparative Ethnic Studies. This scholarship recognizes the importance of engagement at WSU, and in the broader community. It seeks to recognize the “freedom dreams,” the students who fight for justice each and every day, and the efforts of students to effect change to fulfill the promises of our communities.

Outstanding Achievement in Ethnic Studies Scholarship

For full-time undergraduate students majoring or minoring in the field of Comparative Ethnic Studies who have an outstanding scholarly research essay or creative work in Comparative Ethnic Studies. The research essay and creative work must have been written for a WSU Comparative Ethnic Studies course, or have been presented at a conference.

Gabriel Cardenas Memorial Award

For full-time undergraduate Chicano/a and Latina/o students who have superior academic standing, and demonstrate leadership ability and the potential for community and civic leadership. Apply through the Chicanx Latinx Student Center.

Foreign Languages and Cultures Scholarships

Frank and Winifred Cobb Foreign Language Scholarship
For full-time undergraduate students of junior or senior standing majoring in the field of foreign languages. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement.

Oscar and Muriel Holloway Ferrians Scholarship
For students who are studying foreign languages who are deserving and have financial need.

Foreign Languages Special Scholarship Fund
For students studying foreign languages.

Chris Haaf Travel Fund
For undergraduate and graduate student travel to Germany or Austria to acquire greater proficiency in the German language and a direct exposure to the culture of the region.

Christopher “CJ” and Nannea “Nan” Johnson Scholarship
For junior and senior standing students pursuing a foreign languages degree with a GPA in foreign language courses of 3.5 or higher and an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher, with a first preference for students studying French.

Robert B. and Adele B. Knox Scholarship
For undergraduate and graduate students in foreign languages with a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Arne Lindberg Scholarship
For undergraduate and graduate students in foreign languages.

Elizabeth G. Lord Scholarship
For foreign language students with financial need who are scholastically competent in German to attain excellence in the language, particularly in study abroad programs.

Albert W. Thompson Education Abroad Scholarship
For undergraduate study abroad students (foreign language major/minor not required). This scholarship is awarded by nomination of advisor or department chair. Apply through the Office of International Programs Study Abroad Scholarships.

Kenneth H. Vanderford Scholarship
For full-time regularly enrolled students majoring in foreign languages with excellent character and with potential for growth in their profession.

Excellence Funds

Comparative Ethnic Studies Excellence Fund
To provide essential enrichment for student and faculty research, scholarships, support for the quality of instruction, visiting lecturers, equipment, and other pressing needs of the school.

Foreign Languages Excellence Fund
To provide essential enrichment for student and faculty research, scholarships, support for the quality of instruction, visiting lecturers, equipment, and other pressing needs of the school.

Languages, Cultures, and Race Excellence Fund
To provide essential enrichment for student and faculty research, scholarships, support for the quality of instruction, visiting lecturers, equipment, and other pressing needs of the school.

Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Full-time regularly enrolled WSU student in good standing
  • Certified SLCR major or minor, or declared intent to pursue an SLCR program

Graduate

  • Minimum 3.5 GPA
  • Full-time regularly enrolled WSU student in good standing
  • Conference presentation or academic career development support

  • Unofficial transcript(s)
  • Choose one or both CES essays
  • Essay format
    • 12 pt. font
    • Double spaced
    • MLA format
    • 1600 words each

Foreign Language Students

  • Unofficial transcript(s)
  • Essay format
    • 12 pt. font
    • Double spaced
    • MLA format
    • 500 words maximum

Award Requirements

  • Write a thank you letter to the donor(s)
  • Attend the SLCR Awards Ceremony on April 22, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. in the Chinook, room 150
  • Must be enrolled full-time at WSU and in good standing when funds are awarded
