About the Award

The holder of the Marianna Merritt Matteson and Donald S. Matteson Distinguished Professorship in Foreign Languages is expected to foster the understanding of foreign cultures through the teaching of literature, linguistics, or foreign language pedagogy and to engage in scholarly activities which benefit not only the faculty and department but the academic community as well. The holder is also expected to provide, in collaboration with others, leadership for maintenance of a strong program of scholarly work as well as teaching and outreach programs to prepare students to enter the global society confidently and capably.

Elma Ryan-Bornander Distinguished Chair

About the Award

Holders of the Elma Ryan-Bornander Distinguished Chair are selected from among WSU’s most respected and senior faculty members to spend one or two years in residence in the WSU Honors College, teaching, lecturing, and advising students. Distributions from the associated fund, established by WSU alumna Elma Ryan Bornander Anderson (1941), supplement the chair’s salary for hiring assistants and covering expenses related to their scholarly work.
