Are you a language minor or major?  Interested in advancing your language skills or learning language in a study abroad program for summer or regular semester?  The School of Languages, Cultures, and Race (SLCR) encourages our students to participate in a study abroad program in order to build language skills and gain cultural knowledge first-hand in a country of choice.

The Office of International Programs Study Abroad Programs in Bryan Hall 206 is the place to begin. Attend a Global Cougs 101 workshop, explore the types of programs offered, where the study abroad programs are offered, academic planning, and how to apply.  Listed below are specific faculty-led study abroad opportunities offered by the faculty in the SLCR.

WSU Summer in France: Faculty-Led: L’art de Vivre in Paris with Professor Insook Webber

  • Layered with both history and all things avant-garde and ultramodern, Paris retains an enduring prestige through the ages. We are excited to offer L’art de Vivre in Paris, a faculty-led summer study abroad program in Paris. This 6-week immersive program will be centrally located within proximity of Paris’ most renowned cultural, artistic, and academic institutions.
  • You will live independently in beautiful, shared Parisian apartments, with a chance to meet with local French students, while earning 6 credits toward your degree and furthering your career path. At the same time as learning or deepening your French language skills, you will participate in the city’s rich cultural life by visiting such monuments as the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Centre Pompidou and attending a danse performance at the Opéra Garnier, among other activities.
  • Excursions outside of Paris will take you, among others, to Versailles, Monet’s home and garden at Giverny, and the House of Van Gogh at the village of Auvers-sur-Oise. The program also offers an optional overnight trip either to the rugged Provence in the south of France or to the legendary Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy. As the past participants have reported, you will feel transformed by the experience.

WSU Summer in Berlin: German Language, Culture and History with Professors Joshua Bonzo and Lisa Hoeller

  • Berlin: The divided and reunited city –
  • Nearly 37 years after the historic fall of the Berlin wall, world cultures are still talking about and remembering ‘that day’ in 1989. Now is your chance to experience it all first-hand! Walk the line where the wall stood, stand under the Brandenburg Gate, where thousands once joined in celebrating unity and freedom. Experience the amazing blend of old and modern in one of the most eclectic cultures in all of Europe, in the largest city in the European Union!
  • In addition to exploring Berlin, students will travel to Leipzig, home to Johann Sebastian Bach and the site of the famed Monday demonstration march (where nearly 100,000 demonstrators gathered to march for freedom in East Germany). Students will also be introduced to the very first official capitol of Germany, before it was Germany, Quedlinburg (a UNESCO World Heritage Preservation Site).
  • Students participating in our program who have completed 204 return to WSU just one course short of a German minor (any student who has taken any 300-level course will return with the minor completed). Students will have fulfilled the largest requirement for a German second major (the study abroad component), and all have returned with a greater understanding of what it means to be a global citizen.
  • See for yourself a city that still echoes the past in art, architecture, and culture and is able to blend it with modern lifestyle, fashion, green living, and flair.

WSU Summer in Spain: Spanish Language and Culture by the Mediterranean Sea with Joseba Perez Guerrero and Francisco Arellano-Serratos

  • Spend four weeks in Valencia, a vibrant city that beautifully blends history, modernity, and natural beauty. Situated on the Mediterranean coast, Valencia is known for is stunning beaches, historic architecture, and a thriving cultural scene.
  • Explore Valencia’s futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, its charming old town, and its iconic Turia Gardens, a former riverbed turned into a lush green park.
  • Valencia is also the birthplace of the famous Spanish dish, paella, and the popular drink, horchata – culinary experiences you simply cannot miss.
  • With its warm climate and a welcoming atmosphere, Valencia is a destination that captures the essence of both traditional and contemporary Spain.

Course Prerequisites Requirements:  Spanish 204 or 208; 2.0 cumulative GPA
Earn 6 credits: Spanish 307 or 407 and For_Lang 300.

Bilateral Exchange Opportunities

Students can pay WSU tuition to study for a term (or more!) in another country. Bilateral exchanges initiated by the College of Arts and Sciences are listed below, but additional exchange opportunities can be found.
