Application Requirements for Comparative Ethnic Studies Students
Community Engagement and Activism Award
- Write an essay detailing and explaining your activism complying with the following guidelines:
- 12 pt. font
- Double spaced
- MLA, APA, or Chicago format
- 500 words
Outstanding Achievement in Ethnic Studies
- Attached a copy of a paper you presented at a conference or wrote for a CES course.
- Attached a separate document explaining where the paper was presented or what course it was used for.
Award Requirements
- Write a thank you letter to the donor(s)
- Must be enrolled full-time at WSU and in good standing when funds are awarded

Comparative Ethnic Studies
- Community Engagement and Activism Award
For full-time undergraduate students majoring or minoring in the field of Comparative Ethnic Studies. This scholarship recognizes the importance of engagement at WSU, and in the broader community. It seeks to recognize the “freedom dreams,” the students who fight for justice each and every day, and the efforts of students to effect change to fulfill the promises of our communities.
A student seeking a Community Engagement and Activism Award is required to turn in a 500-word essay answering the following question: What is social justice to you and how do you work toward social justice?
To be considered for this award, you must fill in the Comparative Ethnic Studies Awards Cover Sheet and follow its instructions. Please contact slcr@wsu.edu to be sent a copy of the form. - Outstanding Achievement in Ethnic Studies Award
For full-time undergraduate students majoring or minoring in the field of Comparative Ethnic Studies who have an outstanding scholarly research essay or creative work in Comparative Ethnic Studies. The research essay and creative work must have been written for a WSU Comparative Ethnic Studies course, or have been presented at a conference.
A Student seeking an Outstanding Achievement in Ethnic Studies Award should provide an 8-12 page scholarly essay or creative work prepared for a CES course or an academic conference addressing any main topic in Comparative Ethnic Studies, including but not limited to: inequalities or disparities in race (e.g., education, criminal justice system, health, income, popular culture, etc.), the relationship between race and other social categories (such as gender, sexuality, ability, etc.), or social change related to race, ethnicity, and/or nationality, among other topics.

For full-time undergraduate Chicano/a and Latina/o students who have superior academic standing, and demonstrate leadership ability and the potential for community and civic leadership. Apply through the Chicanx Latinx Student Center.

For junior and senior standing students pursuing a foreign languages degree with a GPA in foreign language courses of 3.5 or higher and an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher, with a first preference for students studying French. - Robert B. and Adele B. Knox Scholarship

For undergraduate study abroad students (foreign language major/minor not required). This scholarship is awarded by nomination of advisor or department chair. Apply through the Office of International Programs Study Abroad Scholarships. - Kenneth H. Vanderford Scholarship
For full-time regularly enrolled students majoring in foreign languages with excellent character and with potential for growth in their profession.
Humanities and Social Studies

For student athletes in the WSU athletics program who are majoring in General Studies - Maradel Krummel Gale General Studies Scholarship
For students of junior or higher standing who are majoring in General Studies with a 3.2 GPA or higher, with a preference for students studying social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences.
