SLCR students visiting the Whitman Mission National Historic Site in Walla Walla, Washington StateOn Saturday, September 14, a group of our students visited the Whitman Mission National Historic Site in Walla Walla, Washington State. There, they watched a documentary and took a guided walk through a site that was once home to the Cayuse Native American tribe, where Presbyterian missionaries arrived in 19th century. Our students learned how tensions can be created and the dramatic consequences of implementing colonial projects without considering the original inhabitants of a given region and their culture. The aboriginal people of Cayuse Country (near Walla Walla River) were placed on a reservation, which had a huge and long-term negative impact on their lives: from being semi-nomadic, they became confined to a reservation.
