Begoña De Quintana Lasa
Graduate Student, Spanish
I am pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Foreign Languages and Culture after graduating from Deusto University with a degree in English linguistics and literature in my hometown of Bilbao, Spain, and a Master of Arts Degree in English literature from Swansea University in the UK.
I grew up speaking Basque as well Spanish, and have always been fascinated by languages, literature, history, culture and religion. This passion combined with my concern for gender issues was what first made me interested in Chicana literature.
After reading and researching some of these writers, I decided to pursue this interest by further studying literature in Spanish. In between – and sometimes during- my degrees, I have worked as an English teacher, and also as a volunteer Spanish teacher for immigrants. I am honored to have the chance of teaching my language at WSU.
Some of my other passions are traveling, which I do as often as she can, and baking, which I do more often than I should. And of course music, cinema, architecture – in short, any form of artistic expression. In Oscar Wilde’s words, “Human life – that appeared to him the one thing worth investigating.” And I believe art in any of its forms to be the best way of doing so.
